What Types of Dentures Are Available?

Partial Dentures

How many heathy teeth you have will determine what kind of dentures you need. There are partial dentures and complete dentures. Partial dentures will usually be created for patients that still have some healthy teeth. Partial dentures can be similar to dental bridges in that they are used to fill in large gaps in your teeth.

Complete Dentures

Complete Dentures are needed for patients who no longer have any teeth in the upper or lower mouth. Complete dentures are a full set of artificial teeth and the procedure for them is as much of a cosmetic procedure as a procedure to improve proper mouth function (chewing, talking, etc.).

Conventional vs. Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures may be needed if you just had teeth extracted or dental implant surgery and your mouth needs time to heal. During this 1-2 month healing timeframe, we will have temporary immediate dentures for you to comfortably go over your gums so you don’t have to be without teeth while your mouth is recovering.

Then, once your mouth has recovered we will adhere your “conventional” dentures to your gums. Conventional dentures are the dentures that we created with teeth that will look great in your mouth.

Dentures Procedure

  1. Examination – During our first consult and exam, we will first answer any questions or concerns you have going into a dentures procedure. Then we will take a look at your mouth and determine whether it would be best to extract your teeth if they are unhealthy, or if your current teeth are healthy, determine if partial dentures may be a better option.
  2. Denture Made in Lab – After our determination as to whether it would be best for you to get partials or complete, then we will take X-rays and 3D imaging of your mouth to determine the best teeth size and shapes for your dentures.
  3. Application – There are two ways we can adhere the dentures to your gums. You can use an adhesive which makes your dentures removable. Or you can connect the dentures to your gums through dental implants, which is a more permanent solution.
