How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?

If you are reading this page and you currently have a toothache, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need a root canal. You may just be experiencing temporary tooth sensitivity or perhaps you have a cavity and you just need a minor filling. The best thing you can do is to call us to make an appointment so we can give you a full mouth examination. Then we can assess what would be the best procedure for your situation.

What Causes a Root Canal?

A root canal procedure is needed when tooth decay goes past the first level of your tooth, the enamel, then past your second level, the dentin, and into the third level, which is called the pulp. The pulp is the layer of your teeth that houses your connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. When the tooth decay reaches the pulp, it can cause inflammation and even infection of your teeth and gums. This is what causes the pain or toothache.

How Do I Get Rid of My Toothache?

What Is the Root Canal Process Like?

If you do in fact need a root canal, our procedure will most likely go as follows:

  1. Exam: We will first check out what dental work you’ve had done in the past. If we notice that you have any dental fixtures such as crowns, bridges, dental implants, etc., we will be sure to work carefully around them. We will also take this time to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
  2. Sedate: When you are ready for the procedure, we will start by numbing around the affected tooth.
  3. Clean Out Tooth Decay: This is where we file out all of the tooth decay.
  4. Remove Root Canal Pulp: Using highly advanced, technological equipment we are able to quickly remove your damaged tooth’s infected pulp.
  5. Seal & Fill: We will then wash out your tooth’s root canals and insert a filling to close up the hole. Then we will send a 3D imaging file to our lab to create a crown for you.
  6. Last Appointment: When we receive the dental crown from our lab, we will place the crown over your tooth and your smile will be as good as new!
